family loses their home on Christmas Eve

A family residence was destroyed by fire on the Sunday morning in Sainte-Madeleine, Montérégie. Absent at the time of the fire, the family of four lost their home on Christmas Eve.

After receiving several calls shortly after midnight, the municipality’s fire department set off a general alarm. Firefighters from neighboring municipalities came in as reinforcements. No less than 40 firefighters fought the flames in the two-story house on the rue des Fondateurs.

“The work has been complicated by the cold weather,” explained Mathieu Lacombe, deputy director of the Sainte-Madeleine Fire Department.

The family, who was outside, was taken care of by the Red Cross disaster relief service.

The fire was under control and no one was injured. The thesis of the arson has been dismissed by firefighters, but it is unknown for the moment the origin of the disaster.

“It’s too early to give an estimate of the damage. However, we are talking about a total loss for the residence, “said Mr. Lacombe.

Community help

A few hours after the disaster, the inhabitants of Sainte-Madeleine were already getting together to help the family, which has two young children.

“Here it is not long. We have a community of Sainte-Madeleine on the internet. People have gathered and they communicate fairly quickly, “said the mayor of the municipality, André Lefebvre, TVA News.

Mayor Lefebvre was looking for temporary housing for this family on Christmas Eve. “We know here in the region entrepreneurs who have apartment blocks,” he said.
