Canada triumphs at World Junior Championship

Canada won a 17th World Junior Championship title with a 3-1 win over Sweden on Friday night in Buffalo.

The Canadiens’ last win at this tournament was in 2015. Connor McDavid was part of the team.

Canada’s head coach Dominique Ducharme said after his team’s win that he was very satisfied with the players’ commitment.

“They all play big minutes with their team, they are all dominant players and they come here and they have to play less,” said the coach, obviously proud of his protégés.

Ducharme announced that he had completed the loop after three years behind the Team Canada junior bench. He led his last match with the Canadian team. He also realized the goal he had set for his father’s death in December 2016.

“I wanted to bring him a gold medal [in 2016] to be in Montreal last year I thought it would be a good place, since he was a good supporter of the Canadian […] and there we were able to close the chapter tonight. ”

For Quebec’s Maxime Comtois, this win at the World Junior Championship counts for a lot. He who had difficulties last year believes that he has proved to his detractors that he could be a winner.

“There are a lot of people who criticized me about my game […] even when I arrived at the camp there was no one who saw me on the team. I made my way, I worked hard and today it pays. I can put my gold medal in the face, “exclaimed the player who will celebrate his 19th birthday on January 8th.

In my resume now it’s going to be written World Junior Champion . There is no word to describe that.

he Swedes have only two crowns to their credit in this tournament, but have nevertheless now won the silver medal ten times. Their most recent title dates back to 2012.

European captain Lias Andersson, visibly frustrated with the result during the post-match ceremony, rushed to take the silver medal that had just been wrapped around his neck and hurled it into the entertained.

“The guy in the crowd wanted him more than me [my medal]. I did not want the silver, “said Andersson after the final.

His gesture finally brought happiness to a partisan for a few moments, after which the latter gave the medal to the Swedish captain. Asked if he was happy to have had the chance to own it a second time by a journalist, Andersson simply answered no.

Summary of the final

Winning captain Dillon Dubé opened the scoring in the second period. It was the first time in the tournament that Sweden was late.

The Swedes quickly responded with a goal from Tim Soderlund shorthanded. Sweden also scored two goals against the Americans in the semi-finals.

The tie has persisted until there is 1 minute and 40 seconds remaining in the match. Tyler Steenbergen redirected a pass from defender Conor Timmins’ blue line in the Swedish net. This was his first goal of the tournament. Steenbergen was the only forward in Canada to have no goals in the competition.

Canada’s third win came in a deserted net by Alex Formenton.

The goalkeeper of the Carter Hart Maple Leaf was terrific. He repelled 35 pucks. His counterpart Filip Gustavsson gave up twice on 27 shots.

The United States consoles with bronze

The Americans battered the Czechs in an overwhelming 9-3 win, and the United States won the bronze medal earlier Friday.

Kieffer Bellows broke the record for the most goals in the same World Junior Championship. He scored twice in the game against the Czechs and finished the tournament with nine goals. The previous record belonged to Jeremy Roenick with eight wins in the 1989 tournament.

“I owe my success to all my teammates,” said Bellows, the son of former NHL player Brian Bellows and the New York Islanders’ first-round pick choice in 2016. I had a lot of fun during last two years and it will be difficult to no longer participate in this event. ”

His teammate Trent Frederic scored four goals for the Americans. Ryan Poehling, the Montreal Canadiens first-round pick in 2017, collected his first goal of the tournament at a penalty kill. Joey Anderson and Patrick Harper have also found the back of the net.

We can see the resilience of this group. The coaching staff made sure we understood the pride of winning a medal. Even if it’s not gold, the bronze represents a lot.

Dominated 7-0 after two periods, the Czech Republic woke up to the third commitment and scored three goals. Martin Kaut, Radovan Pavlik and Daniel Kurovsky made the strings vibrate.

Goalkeeper Josef Korenar allowed 3 goals out of 16 shots before being chased out of the match in the second half. Korenar found his net to start the third period and he pushed back nine shots, after the other Czech goalkeeper Jakub Skarek gave four goals.

US goaltender Jake Oettinger allowed three goals and gave way to young Jeremy Swayman at the end of the match. They faced a total of 35 shots.

Despite its defeat, the Czech Republic had its best result since 2005. It had won the bronze medal.

“It’s a good result, but we wanted a better one,” said Czech top scorer Filip Zadina. We wanted to bring a medal back to the Czech Republic and we did not do it. We are sad. ”

The United States had previously lost in the semifinals 4-2 to Sweden, while the Czech Republic lost 7-2 to Canada.

This is the third year in a row that the Americans have finished on the podium. They won gold in 2017 and bronze in 2016.
