A portion of Highway 401 eastbound in Toronto was closed Wednesday morning after a fatal accident. At least two people died.
Shortly after 4 am, emergency crews were called east of Don Valley Parkway and found a vehicle wrapped around a metal beam supporting an overhead road sign.
It is not clear whether the victims are men or women at this stage.
The car was almost cut in half under the impact of the accident.
All eastbound slipways were closed between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road. The eastbound ramp on Warden Avenue has also been closed. The tracks have since been reopened.
Express lanes remain closed from Leslie Street to Brimley Road.
“For some unknown reason, the driver lost control of the vehicle,” Prash Niranjan said. The police are investigating to determine the circumstances of the accident, while examining various factors, such as speed and weather conditions.
As the vehicle is a recent model, investigators believe they can retrieve information from their computer systems.
The OPP has not indicated how long these closures could last.
