Health Canada reports that HP Inc. Canada is announcing the recall of lithium-ion batteries available with HP laptops and portable workstations as they may overheat, posing a risk of burns and fire.
The recalled batteries, which were manufactured in China, were sold from December 2015 until last month in various retail stores and online. They were sold separately as replacement batteries.
Health Canada states that as of December 18, no incidents or injuries have been reported to the company regarding the use of these products in Canada.
In contrast, in the United States, eight incidents involving overheated batteries and an incident resulting in injury were reported.
Approximately 2400 of these batteries were sold in Canada. Another 44,000 were sold in the United States.
Consumers are encouraged to immediately stop using these batteries and to visit the Health Canada website to recall the HP batteries to determine if their product is covered and to order another free battery, if applicable.
