OPP say at least two people lost their lives in a Tuesday night following a pileup on Highway 400 in the Barrie area, about 100 kilometers north of downtown Toronto.
Shortly before 11:30 pm, 14 vehicles were involved in the accident, including two tanker trucks containing hydrocarbons and three transport trucks. The collisions caused a major fire.
At the beginning of the day, Wednesday, the police remained unable to explain the exact circumstances of the pileup. However, Sergeant Kerry Schmidt indicated that it is likely that the first impact was caused by a truck that could not brake enough so other vehicles were slowing down in front of him.
A section of Highway 400 is closed to traffic in both directions and should remain so throughout Wednesday.
